100th Day of School

Today we celebrated our 100th day of school. It was so enjoyable to see the students dressed up like they were 100 years old. They may not be feeling 100 years old, but they are definately 100 days smarter since the start of grade one . . . 100 days ago.

Math Strategy #1 – Create a Picture

In math we are currently working on addition and subtraction facts to 20. Throughout this unit, the students will be taught a variety of problem solving strategies and provided with several opportunities to practice applying them to the various math stories and challenges presented each day. This week we worked on creating pictures to solve math story problems.

Today the students were presented with the math story posted below. After some tracing, cutting, gluing and painting, each student had created a snowman picture that represented their thinking when solving the math problem.

Grade 1 Outcomes:

I can create and describe a repeating pattern. (snowman scarf)

I can demonstrate an understanding of addition using a variety of concrete and visual representations and record the process symbolically.

“There were 12 fluffy snowflakes falling on the snowman. The snowman looked up and 8 more snowflakes started falling down. How many snowflakes were falling on the snowman altogether?”

Snowmen At Night

Today we enjoyed reading the story “Snowmen At Night” by Caralyn Buehner. The story offers many amusing details about the secret life of snowmen and where they go at night. Following the story, students were asked to write what they would do if they were a snowman at night. The final stage of the project was to create a snowman portrait using ripped pieces of paper. The grade ones had a lot of fun and were very creative with their ideas for writing. Exploring Shades Through Art

Students were exploring how adding black to a color makes the color a shade darker and adding white to a color makes the color a shade lighter while painting their “Blue Dog” project.

Creating Color

We recently finished a unit in science called “Creating Color.” This unit was a lot of fun and at times very messy. Today I asked the students to write 3 things they learned about color during this unit. All students demonstrated exceptional learning through their writing; it was such a pleasure to read. Below are some samples of what students chose to write about; typed exactly as was written.

New Year’s Resolutions

There’s No Time Like The Present!

Today we enjoyed reading the story “Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution” to help us better understand what a resolution is and how to make a resolution. We concluded that a resolution is a promise you make to yourself to be better or to help others.

With a good understanding of what a resolution is, the students embarked on writing their own resolutions for the new year of 2012. I have included some examples below and as you will see, the student resolutions vary in theme from school to home and community; they are very thoughtful and personal to each student.

“I resolve to help my Mom more.” “I resolve to be nicer to my sister.” ”I resolve to, when I see garbage I will pick it up.”

“I resolve to exchange my books everyday.” “I resolve to teach others to draw.” ”I resolve to practice my reading.”
